People First Isn't a Perk. It's the Point.
March is B Corp Month, a time when the global B Corp community comes together to celebrate one idea that sounds simple but is actually pretty radical: business can be a force for good.
And this year, Employee Appreciation Day falls right in the mix on March 6th. We don't think that's a coincidence. Because at Avenue, the way we treat our people and the way we treat the world aren't two separate conversations. They're the same one.
So let's talk about what it actually means to put people first. As a B Corp digital marketing agency, it's not just a value we post on our website. It's how we operate every single day.
B Corp Isn't a Badge. It's a Commitment.
You've probably seen the B Corp logo floating around. Maybe you've wondered what it actually means.
Here's the short version: to become a certified B Corp, companies go through a rigorous assessment across five pillars: workers, community, environment, customers, and governance. It's not a one-and-done thing either. Recertification happens every three years, and the bar keeps rising.
For Avenue, earning that certification meant looking honestly at how we show up. Not just for clients, but for our team, our vendors, and our community here in Portland. It meant asking uncomfortable questions and being willing to change the answers.
That's what makes B Corp different from a press release.
What 'People First' Looks Like Behind the Scenes
As a women, BIPOC, and minority-owned and led agency, putting people first isn't aspirational language for us. It's lived experience. We know what it feels like to be an afterthought in rooms that weren't built for you. That shapes everything.
It shapes who we hire and how we hire them. It shapes how we structure projects so our team isn't running on fumes. It shapes which clients we say yes to and which ones we respectfully pass on.
Employee Appreciation Day gets a lot of love on LinkedIn (and we're here for it), but genuine appreciation doesn't fit into one calendar slot. It looks like:
Paying people fairly and transparently.
Flexible hours and flexible PTO, so team members can take time off for the holidays and celebrations that actually matter to them.
Volunteer Time Off (VTO), because doing good work and doing good in your community shouldn't be an either/or.
Birthday holidays, and yes, they are mandatory. Taking your birthday off isn't a perk here. It's a requirement.
A one-month paid sabbatical at the five-year mark. We have a team member hitting that milestone this year, and we could not be more excited to send them off for a full month of rest, adventure, or whatever their heart needs.
Celebrating wins loudly and turning the hard moments into learning opportunities.
None of that is magic. It's just intention, followed by action, followed by accountability. Rinse and repeat.
Why a Happy Team Makes Better Marketing
Here's something the marketing industry doesn't talk about enough: the quality of your agency's internal culture shows up directly in the quality of the work.
When our team feels supported, they think more creatively. When they're not burned out, they catch the details that move the needle on SEO rankings. When they care about a client's mission, the digital advertising strategy reflects that care. When they feel psychologically safe, they'll speak up about what's not working. That's how campaigns actually improve.
When your people thrive, the work thrives. It really is that simple.
For purpose-driven brands working to change something real in the world, having a values-aligned agency team that actually believes in the work isn't a nice-to-have. It's the difference between marketing that lands and marketing that just exists.
The B Corp Ripple Effect
One of our favorite parts of the B Corp community is the ripple effect. When businesses commit to higher standards across workers, communities, and the environment, it shifts what's considered normal. And when those businesses are marketing agencies? We have a front-row seat to help our clients tell that story to the world.
That's not lost on us. Every SEO strategy we build for a mission-driven brand, every ad campaign we run for a nonprofit, every social media strategy rooted in authentic storytelling is connected to this larger belief: how you show up matters.
Business as a force for good isn't a slogan. It's a design principle.
Here's to the Humans Behind the Work
This March, we're celebrating B Corp Month with a lot of gratitude. For the movement, for our community, and honestly? For our team. The people at Avenue who show up every day and make the work worth doing.
Employee Appreciation Day is March 6th. B Corp Month is all month long. But people-first? That's every single day at Avenue.
If you're a purpose-driven brand looking for a digital marketing agency that actually walks the talk, we'd love to connect!
